Samuel Henry was born on April 22nd, 1825 in Edgecombe Co. NC. Samuel Henry's father was Duncan Hargrove and his mother was Sally Land. His paternal grandmother was Charity Hargrove; his maternal grandparents were Littleberry Land and Mary "Molly" McLemore. He had four brothers and eight sisters, named Gray Lemon, Thomas Daniel, James Burrel (Burwell), Edward L, Mary Elizabeth, Frances Deller "Della", Martha Ann Charity, Sara Nina, Florence Anna, Malvina Catherine, Ina Elizabeth and Louisana Jane.
