Mary Elizabeth was born in 1830. Mary Elizabeth's father was Duncan Hargrove and her mother was Sally Land. Her paternal grandmother was Charity Hargrove; her maternal grandparents were Littleberry Land and Mary "Molly" McLemore. She had five brothers and seven sisters, named Samuel Henry, Gray Lemon, Thomas Daniel, James Burrel (Burwell), Edward L, Frances Deller "Della", Martha Ann Charity, Sara Nina, Florence Anna, Malvina Catherine, Ina Elizabeth and Louisana Jane.-
