Gilbert "The Red" was born on September 2nd, 1243 in Christchurch,Hampshire,England.  Gilbert "The Red"'s father was Richard de Clare Earl of Gloucester and his mother was Maud De Lacy.  His paternal grandparents were Gilbert de Clare IV Earl of Gloucester and Isabel , Countess of Hertford Marshall; his maternal grandparents were John De Lacy and Margaret De Quincy Countess Of Lincoln. He had a brother and a sister, named Thomas and Roese.  He was the oldest of the three children.  He died at the age of 52 on December 7th, 1295 in Monmouth Castle,England.  He was buried in Tewkesbury Abbey,Gloucestershire,England.
