His paternal grandparents were Mathew Malachi Rushing and Martha E. Ham. He had four brothers and four sisters, named Baron DeKalb Washington, Jr., Andrew Jackson, William Wesley, Phillip Jefferson, Etta, Laura S., Carrie Bell and Cora Lee. He was the oldest of the nine children. He had three half-brothers and four half-sisters, named John Thomas Edmous, Leroy, Franklin Jerome, Bessie Mae, Annie Beatrice, Edith and Mary E..
