Bessie Mae was born on May 18th, 1918 in FL.1 Bessie Mae's father was Baron DeKalb Washington Rushing and her mother was Mary E. McMillian. Her paternal grandparents were Mathew Malachi Rushing and Martha E. Ham. She had three brothers and three sisters, named John Thomas Edmous, Leroy, Franklin Jerome, Annie Beatrice, Edith and Mary E.. She was the oldest of the seven children. She had five half-brothers and four half-sisters, named Charlie M., Baron DeKalb Washington, Jr., Andrew Jackson, William Wesley, Phillip Jefferson, Etta, Laura S., Carrie Bell and Cora Lee.-
