James McDuffie Benton 
James McDuffie was born on May 25th, 1889 in Walterboro, SC.1 James McDuffie's father was James Medicus Benton and his mother was Annie Elizabeth Bishop. His paternal grandparents were Edward H. Benton and Martha Ann Elizabeth Varn. He had six brothers and four sisters, named David Benjamin, Kelly Lee, Laurie Jasper, George Talbert, Richard Brantley, Edward Heyward, Janie, Beulah May, D. Effie and Infant. He was the fifth oldest of the eleven children. He died due to Heart Attack at the age of 52 in 1941 in Sniders, SC.1 General Notes

James owned quite a bit of land in the Sniders area. He also owned and operated a saw mill, which was located about a quarter mile east of Sniders Crossroad, and a couple hundred yards from the Godley-Benton house. It is said that he fired a black man (reason unknown), and that the black man set the mill on fire, which resulted in a total loss. This incident happened shortly after the Great Depression, and because of the financial loss, James had to sell off most of his land holdings to survive.
