James Newis

James was born in March 1852 in Clifford Moor, Boston Spa, Yorkshire, England.¹ James' father was Joseph Newiss and his mother was Ann Hartley. His paternal grandparents were Robert Newis and Sara (Newhouse). He had five brothers and five sisters, named Enoch, Joseph, Edwin C, Charles, Frank, Elizabeth, Sarah Elizabeth, Kate, Esther Ann and Ruth. He was the oldest of the eleven children.
