Pierre II was born about 1155 in Courtenay, Galinois, France.  Pierre II's father was I Pierre and his mother was Elizabeth de Courtenay.  His paternal grandparents were Louis VI "the Fat" Capet and Adelaide De Maurienne; his maternal grandparents were Seigneur de Courtenay Reginald and Matilda de Donjon. He had two brothers and six sisters, named Guillaume, Robert, Alice, Eustachia, Constance, Isabelle, Clementia and Phillippe.  He was the oldest of the nine children.  He died in Epirus, Turkey.

‌Pierre II and Yolande of were married in a religious ceremony on July 1st, 1193.  They had two sons and four daughters, named Robert I, II, Yolande, Marguerite, Marie and Eleanor.
