Joanna was born in September 1191 in Yorkshire, England.  Joanna's father was John Lackland and her mother was Agatha de Ferrers.  Her paternal grandparents were Henry II Curtmantle Plantagenet and Duchess of Aquitaine Eläeonore; her maternal grandparents were William de Ferrers and Sibyl de Braose. She had ten half-brothers and six half-sisters, named Henry III, Richard, Osbert Gifford, Oliver FitzRoy, Geofrey FitzRoy, Richard, Henry, John FitzJohn, Eudo, Ivo, Joan, Isabella 'Elizabeth', Eleanor, Isabel "la Blanche", Joanna and Matilda.  She died in Llanvas, Anglesey, Wales.

‌Joanna and Llewelyn "The were married in a religious ceremony in May 1206 in St. Mary's Priory, Chester, England.  They had two sons and two daughters, named Dafydd ap, Maelgwn Fychan ap, Margaret Marared ferch and Helen Verch.
