Thomas was born in 1878 in Bolton Upon Dearne, Yorkshire.1  Thomas' father was John Morritt and his mother was Emma Brown.  His maternal grandparents were Charles Brown and Sarah Brewins. He had two brothers and seven sisters, named George, Arthur, Ellen, Sarah, Annie, Mary, Emma, Ada and Edith.  He was the third oldest of the ten children.
