Mary was born in 1886 in Carlton, Yorkshire.1   Mary's father was John Morritt and her mother was Emma Brown.  Her maternal grandparents were Charles Brown and Sarah Brewins. She had three brothers and six sisters, named George, Thomas, Arthur, Ellen, Sarah, Annie, Emma, Ada and Edith.  She was the fourth youngest of the ten children.
