Emma was born in 1851 in Drax, Yorkshire and her christening took place there on December 2nd, 1851.1 2   Emma's father was Charles Brown and her mother was Sarah Brewins. She had two brothers and six sisters, named William, Charles, Anne, Mary, Jane, Sarah, Elizabeth and Margaret.  She was the youngest of the nine children.
