Charles was born in 1845 in Drax, Yorkshire and his christening took place there on October 4th, 1845.1 2   Charles' father was Charles Brown and his mother was Sarah Brewins. He had a brother and seven sisters, named William, Anne, Mary, Jane, Sarah, Elizabeth, Margaret and Emma.  He was the third youngest of the nine children.
