William was born in 1844 in Drax, Yorkshire and his christening took place there on January 20th, 1844.1 2   William's father was Charles Brown and his mother was Sarah Brewins. He had a brother and seven sisters, named Charles, Anne, Mary, Jane, Sarah, Elizabeth, Margaret and Emma.  He was the fourth youngest of the nine children.
