Ellen was born in 1876 in Bolton Upon Dearne, West Riding, Yorkshire.1   Ellen's father was John Morritt and her mother was Emma Brown.  Her maternal grandparents were Charles Brown and Sarah Brewins. She had three brothers and six sisters, named George, Thomas, Arthur, Sarah, Annie, Mary, Emma, Ada and Edith.  She was the second oldest of the ten children.
