George was born in 1874 in Bolton Upon Dearne, West Riding, Yorkshire.1   George's father was John Morritt and his mother was Emma Brown.  His maternal grandparents were Charles Brown and Sarah Brewins. He had two brothers and seven sisters, named Thomas, Arthur, Ellen, Sarah, Annie, Mary, Emma, Ada and Edith.  He was the oldest of the ten children.
