William was born on November 5th, 1853 in Gatcombe, Isle of Wight and his christening took place on January 29th, 1854 in Ventnor, Isle of Wight.1 2  William's father was James Groves and his mother was Ann Francis.  His paternal grandparents were William Groves and Jane Barnett. He had a brother and two sisters, named Alfred, Elizabeth and Jane.  He was the second youngest of the four children. He had a half-brother and a half-sister, named Henry and Henrietta.  He died at the age of 62 in December 1915 in Hampstead, Middlesex.3
