Henry was born in 1843 in Gatcombe, Isle of Wight.1   Henry's father was Thomas Seymoor Pittis and his mother was Ann Francis. He had a sister named Henrietta.  He was the younger of the two children. He had two half-brothers and two half-sisters, named Alfred, William, Elizabeth and Jane.
