Henrietta was born in 1841 in Gatcombe, Isle of Wight.1   Henrietta's father was Thomas Seymoor Pittis and her mother was Ann Francis. She had a brother named Henry.  She was the older of the two children. She had two half-brothers and two half-sisters, named Alfred, William, Elizabeth and Jane.
