Harriet was born in March 1846 in Southampton, Hampshire and her christening took place on April 19th, 1846 in St Marys, Southampton, Hampshire.1 2   Harriet's father was Thomas Joseph Gannaway and her mother was Susan Devine.  Her paternal grandparents were Henry George Gannaway and Ann Mainer. She had seven brothers and two sisters, named George, Thomas, John, William, Thomas, Nathanial, Harry, Anne and Lydia.  She was the fourth oldest of the ten children.
