Thomas was born in 1819 in Southampton, Hampshire.1   Thomas' father was Henry George Gannaway and his mother was Ann Mainer.  His paternal grandparents were James Gannaway and Mary Hawks; his maternal grandparents were John Mainer and Sarah Powel. He had four brothers and three sisters, named Henry, James, Wilmot, William, Mary, Emma and Elizabeth.  He was the third oldest of the eight children.  He died at the age of 72 on December 28th, 1891 in Southampton, Hampshire.1
