Henry was born in 1811 in Southampton, Hampshire.1   Henry's father was Henry George Gannaway and his mother was Ann Mainer.  His paternal grandparents were James Gannaway and Mary Hawks; his maternal grandparents were John Mainer and Sarah Powel. He had four brothers and three sisters, named Thomas, James, Wilmot, William, Mary, Emma and Elizabeth.  He was the oldest of the eight children.  He died at the age of 70 in December 1881.
