James was born in 1748 in Southampton, Hampshire and his christening took place on December 27th, 1748 in Millbrook, Southampton, Hampshire.1 2   James' father was Thomas Gannaway and his mother was Mary. He had three brothers and a sister, named John, George, Thomas and Anne.  He was the second youngest of the five children.  He died at the age of 56 in September 1804.
