John was born in 1737 in Millbrook, Southampton, Hampshire and his christening took place there on November 13th, 1737.1 2   John's father was Thomas Gannaway and his mother was Mary. He had three brothers and a sister, named George, James, Thomas and Anne.  He was the oldest of the five children.
