Wilmot was born in 1831.  Wilmot's father was Henry George Gannaway and his mother was Ann Mainer.  His paternal grandparents were James Gannaway and Mary Hawks; his maternal grandparents were John Mainer and Sarah Powel. He had four brothers and three sisters, named Henry, Thomas, James, William, Mary, Emma and Elizabeth.  He was the second youngest of the eight children.  He died in 1831.
