Walter's father was Walter Colquhoun Towers and his mother was Jane (Jean, Jeanie) Kerr. His paternal grandparents were William Tours and Margaret Colquhoun; his maternal grandparents were Archibald Kerr and Isabella (Bella) Purdon. He had six brothers and two sisters, named William, Archibald, John, Alexander, James, Elmer, Isabella and Margaret. He was the second oldest of the nine children. He died due to a medical problem, burst appendix, at the age of 60 on October 9th, 1939 in Santa Clara.³
