Mary's father was David Robertson and her mother was Mary Eaglesome Smith Frew. Her paternal grandparents were James Robertson and Ann McMurran; her maternal grandparents were John Frew and Janet Shaw. She had two brothers and three sisters, named James, William, Janet, Annie and Robertson. She was the third youngest of the six children. She had two half-brothers and a half-sister, named Charles, John and Margaret. She died due to a medical problem, scarlet fever, 3 days; meningitis, 1 day, at the age of 5 on May 7th, 1874 in Glasgow.²
