James' father was David Robertson and his mother was Mary Eaglesome Smith Frew. His paternal grandparents were James Robertson and Ann McMurran; his maternal grandparents were John Frew and Janet Shaw. He had a brother and four sisters, named William, Janet, Annie, Mary and Robertson. He was the oldest of the six children. He had two half-brothers and a half-sister, named Charles, John and Margaret.
