Janet's father was David Robertson and her mother was Mary Eaglesome Smith Frew. Her paternal grandparents were James Robertson and Ann McMurran; her maternal grandparents were John Frew and Janet Shaw. She had two brothers and three sisters, named James, William, Annie, Mary and Robertson. She was the second oldest of the six children. She had two half-brothers and a half-sister, named Charles, John and Margaret. She died at the age of 48 in 1913 in Govan.
