William's father was John Love and his mother was Elizabeth McLatchie. His maternal grandparents were Hugh McLatchie and Hannah Goldie. He had four brothers and six sisters, named Alexander, Thomas, Hugh, Robert, Hanna, Mary, Elizabeth, Marion, Jemima and Janet. He was the youngest of the eleven children. He died at the age of 8 in 1885 in New Cumnock.
