Alexander was born in 1858 in New Cumnock.¹

Alexander's father was John Love and his mother was Elizabeth McLatchie. His maternal grandparents were Hugh McLatchie and Hannah Goldie. He had four brothers and six sisters, named Thomas, Hugh, Robert, William, Hanna, Mary, Elizabeth, Marion, Jemima and Janet. He was the second oldest of the eleven children. He died at the age of 72 in 1930 in Troon.
