Janet's father was John Love and her mother was Elizabeth McLatchie. Her maternal grandparents were Hugh McLatchie and Hannah Goldie. She had five brothers and five sisters, named Alexander, Thomas, Hugh, Robert, William, Hanna, Mary, Elizabeth, Marion and Jemima. She was the second youngest of the eleven children. She died at the age of 15 in 1889 in New Cumnock.
