Thomas' father was John Love and his mother was Elizabeth McLatchie. His maternal grandparents were Hugh McLatchie and Hannah Goldie. He had four brothers and six sisters, named Alexander, Hugh, Robert, William, Hanna, Mary, Elizabeth, Marion, Jemima and Janet. He was the fifth oldest of the eleven children.
