James' father was James Fairley and his mother was Alison Thomson. His maternal grandparents were Andrew Thomson and Helen Cunningham. He had two brothers and four sisters, named Henry, Andrew, Helen, Christina, Isabella and Alison. He was the second youngest of the seven children. He died due to heart disease, Valvular Disease of the heart., at the age of 76 on January 3rd, 1935 in Carmunnock.³
