Notes from Ancestry.com family tree: Lawrence Howard Puckett: James served in War of 1812 with Thomas Conrad Coleman who reguested upon his death that James care for his wife and children which he did. This James is called Colonel Browning in Court records of Pendleton Co but I find no mention of such rank in the military records of soldiers from Ky in the war but I have found where James is listed as a private in Glaves Company of which Thomas Coleman served as Lieutenant. It seems unlikely that Thomas as an officer would ask someone not also as capable as he , with or without rank, to care for his family. James was captured by the British and as coustomary turned over to the Indians who tormented him and others killing those wo evoked their contempt by showing sign of weakness. In an incident passed down by him he recounts that as the prisoners stood on a frozen river with the braves on the bank watching, a sqaw pinched his bare chest to the point of bleeding. He clinched his teeth and bore the torment as best he could but as his wrath built and the offending sqaw turned loose her grip and turned to leave him he Kicked her with such force that she slid across the ice surface of the frozen river ,an act for which he thought certain death was imminent as the braves on the bank began to whoop and holler and then rushed from the bank toward him. He closed his eyes Not wanting to see the fierceness of his attackers as they struck him down but instead of tomahawking him they patted him on the back and congratulated him. Therafter the Indians treated him with respect. It was admired that one suffer without complaint. James is identified in Barton tapes as an early justice of the peace for Pendleton CO Ky. The following excerp from the Barton tapes Quotes from court records of a suit over the transfer of the homeplace of Caleb Sr. and his son Col.James in case of Caleb Browning(Jr.) v. Elijah Mattox Pendleton Circuit Court Pkg 121 the deposition of William H. Casey taken May 20,1850 at the house of Elijah Mattox in Pendleton Co.: I was not acquainted with Caleb Browning Senr., he died before I came to the Neighborhood. I Was acquainted with some of his children-with William, Caleb Jr., James Paulina, Polly Browning; and I have seen Fanny Foster, though I had no acquaintance with her. And I am well acquainted with the tract of land at the mouth of Richland Creek on which Caleb Senr. lived, and have known it for 20 years or more. My Understanding is that Col. James Browning first bought the place of William Browning, and moved on it and shortly afterwards died. Question: At the time Adrian Robbins took upon himself, James Browning contract or purchase, was not James Browning himself & wife; and Ann the widow of Caleb Browning Senr.and her daughters Mary, Polina and Ann living all together in this home? Answer: I don't know. James Browning lived here but a short time before his death when he came my information is that he was so ill they brought him up the river in some water craft. They moved away together from this place or house, as is my impression at this time. When I came to this section of the country, James Richey was married to his second wife. general reputation inthe neighborhood was that his wives were both the daughters of Caleb Browning Sr Dec'd; and at the time I came here that his then wife was his second wife the sister of his first wife; and it was with this wife that he removed from this State. (His first wife Susana). My recollection is the widow Ann, her daughter Polina, Polly and son William and hi

Notes from Ancestry.com family tree: Lawrence Howard Puckett: Grave marker for J. W. Browining in Browning cemetary in Hamlin gives 5/4/1821 birth date but this clashes with dob of his bro., Thomas Coleman Browning, on his grave marker i.e. 26 Sept 1821. The 1850 Census for Bracken Co establishes a birth yeart of 1826/7. On the correct date of birth for John W. Browning see 1850 CENSUS BRACKEN CO KY: John W. Browning 24 Priscilla 16; 1860 CENSUS PENDLETON CO KY; John W. Browning 35 Priscilla 22; 1870 CENSUS PENDLETON CO KY: John W. Browning 48 Priscilla 37. John Browning was a HORSE DOCTOR. He lived at Batchelors Rest just north of EE (Buck) Field's property. Cousin Will Browning With whom I Visited briefly in July of 1997 at the old home site ( This is where Will and his parents reside now) says it is the old home place of James Browning b.@1788 and his father Caleb b. @1769. The old log cabin that Caleb built is almost all gone but for a pile of old logs and stone. Will showed me the grave marker for his g.father Thomas C Browning which bears the above birth date and said that Caleb is also buried here alongside some of his slaves. 1
