Aveline was born before 1239.  Aveline's father was John FitzGeoffrey of Berkhampstead and her mother was Isabel de Bigod.  Her paternal grandparents were Geoffrey FitzPiers de Mandeville and Aveline de Clare; her maternal grandparents were Hugh Bigod and Maud Marshal. She had two brothers and three sisters, named John FitzJohn, Richard, Joan, Maud and Isabella.  She was the third oldest of the six children. She had a half-brother and two half-sisters, named Walter, Margery and Maud.  She died on May 20th, 1274.  She was buried in Dunmow Priory.

‌Aveline and Walter were married in a religious ceremony about 1257.  They had a son and a daughter, named Richard the Red Earl and Egidia.
