His paternal grandparents were John McClung and Sarah McCutcheon; his maternal grandparents were David Gwin and Violet Crawford. He had seven brothers and four sisters, named John Henderson, David Gwin, William Alexander, Andrew Crawford, Robert T., Samuel A., Lewis Martin, Sarah Susan, Frances Violet, Mary Margaret and Susan Agnes. He was the sixth oldest of the twelve children.-
