Sarah Susan was born in 1828. Sarah Susan's father was William McClung and her mother was Rachel Viola Gwin. Her paternal grandparents were John McClung and Sarah McCutcheon; her maternal grandparents were David Gwin and Violet Crawford. She had eight brothers and three sisters, named John Henderson, David Gwin, William Alexander, Andrew Crawford, Silas Brown, Robert T., Samuel A., Lewis Martin, Frances Violet, Mary Margaret and Susan Agnes. She was the fourth oldest of the twelve children.-
