Monroe was born on November 13th, 1857 in Shelby,IN. Monroe's father was Thomas Goodrich and his mother was Mary Ray. His paternal grandparents were George Whetzel Goodrich and Mary Tush; his maternal grandparents were Hudson Ray and Margaret Byerly. He had five brothers and four sisters, named Amos, Cyrus, Nathan, Jefferson, Franklin Pierce, Permelia, Prudence, Phoebe Rhoda and Almira. He was the youngest of the ten children.General Notes
