His paternal grandparents were George Whetzel Goodrich and Mary Tush; his maternal grandparents were Hudson Ray and Margaret Byerly. He had five brothers and four sisters, named Cyrus, Nathan, Jefferson, Franklin Pierce, Monroe, Permelia, Prudence, Phoebe Rhoda and Almira. He was the third oldest of the ten children.-
