Maria was born on July 6th, 1772 in Lancaster Co., PA.  Maria's father was Jerome Hieronimus Eckman and her mother was Anna Barbara Slaymaker.  Her paternal grandparents were Johannes Eckman and Eva Dorothea Seitz; her maternal grandparents were Mathias Schleiermacher and Catharine Schiebel. She had six brothers and four sisters, named Johannes, John Martin, John Henry, John Jacob, Heieronimus, Jr., Daniel, Anna Barbara, Eva Dorothea, Mary Magdalena and Esther.  She was the youngest of the eleven children.
