Esther was born on April 17th, 1766 in Lancaster Co., PA.  Esther's father was Jerome Hieronimus Eckman and her mother was Anna Barbara Slaymaker.  Her paternal grandparents were Johannes Eckman and Eva Dorothea Seitz; her maternal grandparents were Mathias Schleiermacher and Catharine Schiebel. She had six brothers and four sisters, named Johannes, John Martin, John Henry, John Jacob, Heieronimus, Jr., Daniel, Anna Barbara, Eva Dorothea, Mary Magdalena and Maria.  She was the second youngest of the eleven children.
