John Jacob was born on January 1st, 1757 in Lancaster Co., PA.  John Jacob's father was Jerome Hieronimus Eckman and his mother was Anna Barbara Slaymaker.  His paternal grandparents were Johannes Eckman and Eva Dorothea Seitz; his maternal grandparents were Mathias Schleiermacher and Catharine Schiebel. He had five brothers and five sisters, named Johannes, John Martin, John Henry, Heieronimus, Jr., Daniel, Anna Barbara, Eva Dorothea, Mary Magdalena, Esther and Maria.  He was the sixth oldest of the eleven children.
