Johannes was born on June 10th, 1746 in Lancaster Co., PA.  Johannes' father was Jerome Hieronimus Eckman and his mother was Anna Barbara Slaymaker.  His paternal grandparents were Johannes Eckman and Eva Dorothea Seitz; his maternal grandparents were Mathias Schleiermacher and Catharine Schiebel. He had five brothers and five sisters, named John Martin, John Henry, John Jacob, Heieronimus, Jr., Daniel, Anna Barbara, Eva Dorothea, Mary Magdalena, Esther and Maria.  He was the oldest of the eleven children.
