His paternal grandparents were Benjamin Buffington and Mary Frissell; his maternal grandparents were John Slaymaker and Elizabeth White. He had six brothers and four sisters, named John, Daniel, William, Henry Slaymaker, Alexander, Benjamin, Margaret, Ann, Jane and Elizabeth.
