Daniel was born on March 28th, 1790 in Lancaster Co., PA. Daniel's father was Thomas Buffington and his mother was Elizabeth Slaymaker. His paternal grandparents were Benjamin Buffington and Mary Frissell; his maternal grandparents were John Slaymaker and Elizabeth White. He had six brothers and four sisters, named John, William, Henry Slaymaker, Thomas, Alexander, Benjamin, Margaret, Ann, Jane and Elizabeth.
