Elizabeth was born in 1862 in Pulborough and her baptism took place there on June 8th, 1862.1 2  Elizabeth's father was William Steer and her mother was Mary Cobby.  Her paternal grandparents were James Steer and Ursula Steyning. She had five brothers and seven sisters, named George, Thomas, William, Felix, Charley, Charlotte, Mary, Flora, Rhoda, Emily, Fanny and Edith.  She was the sixth oldest of the thirteen children.
