Mary was born in 1854 in Pulborough and her baptism took place there on April 30th, 1854.1 2  Mary's father was William Steer and her mother was Mary Cobby.  Her paternal grandparents were James Steer and Ursula Steyning. She had five brothers and seven sisters, named George, Thomas, William, Felix, Charley, Charlotte, Flora, Elizabeth, Rhoda, Emily, Fanny and Edith.  She was the second oldest of the thirteen children.
