George was born in 1856 in Pulborough and his baptism took place there on May 11th, 1856.1 2  George's father was William Steer and his mother was Mary Cobby.  His paternal grandparents were James Steer and Ursula Steyning. He had four brothers and eight sisters, named Thomas, William, Felix, Charley, Charlotte, Mary, Flora, Elizabeth, Rhoda, Emily, Fanny and Edith.  He was the third oldest of the thirteen children.
