Rev. James Mather was born in Leigh, Lancashire in 1773 and died in London 29 May 1840. His father died when he was two years old, and his mother when he was 16. He went to Warrington to learn the trade of a weaver, and later converted and preached after his education.
James was educated and became a minister at New Windsor, Salford, Manchester for three years, and then at Howard Street Chapel, Sheffield for 20 years. Between 1805 and 1806 he performed 9 baptisms.
Later he went to Birmingham and then at the upper Chapel, Islington, London. His two sons Joseph and Robert Cotton were also ministers.
Congregational minister. He was the first person to be buried in Stoke Newington, Hackney cemetery.

In Sep 1830, Minister Joseph Mather married Mary Robinson at Cockermouth. Deborah Anna was born there the following year.
In 1841, Joseph (of independant means) and Mary (both 40) were at Petham Road, Brompton, Kensington, London with Deborah (9), Caroline (6), Hannah (4), Frances (3) and Mary (10mo).
Robert Cotton Mather (brother) had a son Robert born in India, who was an Architect in London. He (27) was with his unmarried cousin Catherine Mather (33) in 1871 who was born in Staffordshire. This must be Jesse's daughter if he is the only other son.
By 1851, Joseph was a dissenting Minister and a Widow, visiting Samuel and Elizabeth Kinder and family in Wiltshire.
In 1861, Joseph was still an Independant Minister and a Widow. He was a 7 Hill Street, Westminster. He had his unmarried daughters Dorothy Robinson (34) and Hannah (23) with him.

In 1870 Hannah is running a Ladies School at 13 Canonbury Place (near Islington), London.

Birth registrations show the MMN = Walter whjich explains Joseph's middle name. However, in 1849, George married Elizabeth Mosley at Chesterfield, so she may have been a widow (tbc).
