Named After: Roland was named after his grandfather Roland 1799 Mary Mather Mary the daughter of James and Anne Mather of the township of Little Bolton - Parish of Great Bolton born Oct'r 8th was baptized Dec 16th 1799. 1773 - 1840 Rev James Mather 67 67 Rev. James Mather was born in Leigh, Lancashire in 1773 and died in London 29 May 1840.  His father died when he was two years old, and his mother when he was 16.  He went to Warrington to learn the trade of a weaver, and later converted and preached after his education. 

James was educated and became a minister at New Windsor, Salford, Manchester for three years, and then at Howard Street Chapel, Sheffield for 20 years. Between 1805 and 1806 he performed 9 baptisms.

Later he went to Birmingham and then at the upper Chapel, Islington, London.  His two sons Joseph and Robert Cotton were also ministers.

Congregational minister. He was the first person to be buried in Stoke Newington, Hackney cemetery.
 1772 Ann Speakman Ann's parents were John and Martha 1797 - >1861 Rev Joseph Mather 64 64 Joseph was born in Little Bolton (confirmed by baptism and 1861 census)

In Sep 1830, Minister Joseph Mather married Mary Robinson at Cockermouth. Deborah Anna was born there the following year.

In 1841, Joseph (of independant means) and Mary (both 40) were at Petham Road, Brompton, Kensington, London with Deborah (9), Caroline (6), Hannah (4), Frances (3) and Mary (10mo).

Robert Cotton Mather (brother) had a son Robert born in India, who was an Architect in London.  He (27) was with his unmarried cousin Catherine Mather (33) in 1871 who was born in Staffordshire.  This must be Jesse's daughter if he is the only other son.

By 1851, Joseph was a dissenting Minister and a Widow, visiting Samuel and Elizabeth Kinder and family in Wiltshire. 

In 1861, Joseph was still an Independant Minister and a Widow.  He was a 7 Hill Street, Westminster. He had his unmarried daughters Dorothy Robinson (34) and Hannah (23) with him. 1795 Betty Mather 1807 - 1877 Rev Robert Cotton Mather 69 69 Reverand Robert Cotton MATHER LL.D. (London) and of Hindoston, father of Rev. James Mather a Congregationalist. 1806 Sarah Mather Sarah's baptism was special.  Her father James was minister, and baptised all the others but for his own daughter, another minister had to step in.  At least Sarah's DOB was known (missing for some of the other children). 1811 - >1870 Ann (Hannah) Mather 59 59 Hannah Mather, Head, Unmarried, aged 50 in 1861.  She was a boarding house keeper at 29 Arundel St, Westminster, London (by Kings College and Temple), although most of her boarders were nephews and nieces.

Hannah continued to run the private hotel at Arundel Street, and is listed in the London City Directory of 1860, 1865

In 1870 Hannah is running a Ladies School at 13 Canonbury Place (near Islington), London. 1812 - 1897 Elizabeth Sewell 85 85 Elizabeth was the daughter of Samuel and Margaret Sewell (nee Brodie) of Limehouse, Middlesex (London East End, by Canary Wharf). 1834 - 1882 Cotton Mather 48 48 1837 - 1909 James Sewell Mather 72 72 James married Agnes about 1869 1842 Richard Increase Mather 1844 - 1924 Robert Brodie Mather 80 80 Roberts grandmothers (Elizabeth Sewell's mother) maiden name was Brodie, which is where the name comes from. 2nd) Carolyn Bradbury (or Bradburg) 2 May 1905 at Battle Creek, Calhoun, Michigan, USA 1874 James Sewell Mather 1876 Charles W Mather Charles had 3 children 1878 - 1933 Elizabeth Erskine Mather 55 55 ~1800 - <1851 Mary Robinson 51 51 Mary Rovinson may have been married before, or had a daughter Dorothy Robindon before she married Joseph Mather in 1830. 1835 - 1900 Catherine Mather 64 64 Catherine (unmarried, 15) was at 165 Tottenham Court Road in 1851 working for a draper.

Catherine, 25 was with her aunt Hannah at Westminster in 1861, together with other siblings and cousins inc Samuel (nephew, 14) & Elizabeth (niece, 17)

Catherine (and Ann Davies) were "Head", running the boarding house at 35 Wigmore Street, Marlybone in 1871, with her cousin Robert living there.

Catherine moved to Cheltenham to retire and be near her sisters.  She died in 1900, a spinster, aged 64 1837 Hannah Mather 1831 - 1929 Deborah Anna Mather 97 97 In 1911, Deborah Anna Mather (single) was a retired head of a ladies college.

Deborah died a spinster, aged 97, leaving an estate of over £2,200. 1838 - 1926 Frances (Fanny) Hathaway Mather 88 88 Frances was 3 in 1841 but no bapotism record.

Fanny, 23 was a governess in Hacknet in 1861

Frances H Mather, was aged 73 in 1911 (born Bilston) living with her sister Deborah Anna Mather, and a friend and maid in Cheltenham. 1840 Mary Mather 1845 Samuel Mather 1844 Elizabeth Mather Elizabeth, aged 17 was with her aunt Hannah in 1861. She is probably the daughter of Joseph Mather as she is born in Middlesex, and Robert Cotton Mather was in India at this time. 1845 - 1858 Catharine Speakman Mather 13 13 1858 Charles Benjamin Mather 1809 - 1889 Jane Mather 79 79 Jane married Alexander Miller, 23 March 1831 in Hackney, London.  The witnesses were Hannah (sister) and James (father).

Alexander (73) and Jane (71) were at 20 Burnt Ash Lane, Lee, London in 1881.  Alexander was the manager of the Jerusalem. 1807 - 1885 Alexander Miller 78 78 Alexander of 100 Burnt Ash Hill, Lee in Kent was Manager of the Jerusalem Coffee house in the City of London  1826 Dorothy Robinson Dorothy was the daughter of Jonathan and Mary Robinson of Cockermouth.


Dorothy Robinson, 34 was a Draperess in 1861 1800 James (Jesse) Mather Jesse son of James and Mather, but NOT the son of Reverend James Mather and Ann that had two Reverend sons Joseph and Robert Cotton Mather.

 1904 - 1978 Ernest Mather 74 74 1869 - 1942 Harry Clifton Mather 73 73 In 1911, Hary C and Eliza (both 41) were in Sheffield with Harry C (18), William H (16), Harold (14), Ernest (7) and Ethel (3). 1867 Eliza Taylor In 1871, Eliza was 3 with Parents James and Elizabeth Taylor at Tuxford, Nottinghamshire. 1904 Laura Egginton Laura's parents were William Egginton and Clara Barham from Sheffield 1907 Ethel Mather 1895 William Henry Mather 1892 - 1963 Harry Clifton Mather 70 70 Died 7 April 1961, leaving £550 to his widow Edith. 1897 Harold Mather 1889 Edith Mather 1840 - 1912 William Mather 71 71 In 1851, William, aged 10 was the oldest son and with his parents near Bkewell.

In 1861, William (20, born Langstone) was a boarder with William and Mary Walsey in Nottinghamshire.

In 1871, William and Margaret (30 & 31) were Inkeepers at the Chequers Inn (still there at Curbar) with Edith E (4) and Harry C (1).  Margaret's moth Mary Machin (53) was with them and they had a servant.

In 1851, George and Elizabeth (34 & 32) were at Gt Longstone, Derbyshire with William (10), Alice (8), Joseph (6), Mary (3) and Eliza Taylor (4, niece)

In 1861, George and Elizabeth (both 43) are at Russian Cottage, Edensor neat Bakewell with Alice (18), Joseph (16) and Mary (13).

In 1871, George (54) is married but alone at Edensor.

In 1881, George and Elizabeth (65 & 62) are at Edensor with g-daughter Alice Learman (8).
 1819 - 1905 Elizabeth Taylor 86 86 Elizabeth daughter of Moses Taytor.  Probaly had a sister Mary, her marriage witness.

Joseph & William were the great-grandson of WIlliam and Ann and buried in the same grave. 1778 Mary Daffin In 1818, William died, aged 29 so Mary may have re-married 1811 - 1890 Joseph Mather 79 79 14 Nov 1830, the Banns were read and on the 29 Nov 1830, Joseph Mather of Edensor married Martha Taylor of Longstone at Bakewell, Derbyshire 1814 - 1893 Samuel Mather 78 78 1 Aug 1839, Samuel married Ann Johnson at Mickleover, All Saints, Derbyshire. 1812 - 1848 John Mather 36 36 1809 Hannah Mather 21 Jun 1830, Hannah Mather married Thomas Sheldon 1807 - 1886 Martha Taylor 79 79 1704 - 1785 William Mather 80 80 Rolands parents were Roland Mather of Edensor and Elizabeth Burrowes of Bakewell 1691 - 1782 Ann Booth 91 91 1735 - 1773 Roland Mather 38 38 In 1765, William, Roland's oldest son was born at Whitwell, Derbyshire.  All the following baptisms were at Edensor.

In 1809., William Mather married Mary Daffion.  If this is him, he was 63. ~1680 - 1729 Roland Mather 49 49 ~1680 Elizabeth Burrows 1716 - 1740 Rachel Mather 24 24 13 Feb 1737, Rachel (21) may have married Mattew Peat at Ashover.  They had a daughter Sarah and son Matthet and Rachel probably died in Childbirth in April 1740. 

She is buried as Rachel Mather, 15 April 1740 at Edensor. 1722 Hannah Mather 1787 - 1846 Job Mather 59 59 7 Nov 1814, Job Mather (X) was witness to the double marriage of Nathaniel Hinds (a labourer) & Ann Horridge.  Also John Cook (a whister) & Ann Jones, both at St. Peter's, Bolton.

Birth registrations show the MMN = Walter whjich explains Joseph's middle name.  However, in 1849, George married Elizabeth Mosley at Chesterfield, so she may have been a widow (tbc).
